School doors closed just weeks ago, but in less than two months students will return to school in need of backpacks stocked with items for the year’s classes and projects – pens, pencils, notebooks, folders, composition books and more. New kindergarteners will start school, anxious to meet their teachers, ready to make new friends and learn the joy of reading. For those unable to afford the items on teacher supply lists, they are also nervous to arrive without markers, colored pencils and crayons for projects and crafts.
The Sharing Shelf is proud to announce the launch of our 14th annual Backpacks to School program, aimed at ensuring that every child and teen has the supplies they need to step confidently through the school doors, ready to learn.
Your collective support has always been crucial to the success of this initiative. Despite the apparent wealth in Westchester County, nearly 67,000 children come from low-income households. In some of our communities, as many as 8 in 10 public school students live in poverty or low-income homes. Moreover, inflation has driven up the cost of school supplies, further burdening these families and the schools they attend.
With your generous contribution of $35, $105, or more, you can help us provide 1,850 fully stocked backpacks to under-resourced children. Your support towards our 2024 goal of $60,000 will equip students with the tools they need to remain active learners, staying on track with their educational journeys.
We can only reach these children with your financial support. In times of challenge, it is essential for our community to come together to aid those in need. When you donate to Backpacks to School, you’re investing in the future of the children of Westchester County.
Donate money: “Buy” a backpack for a child or teen by contributing to this initiative.
Add your business as a drop-site: Collect new school supplies with our provided boxes and flyers.
Fill backpacks: At work, home, or with your camp, friends, or neighbors. We’ll provide a packing list so you can shop and fill your own backpacks.
