Volunteer in the Community

Everyone has a busy schedule. Our flexible volunteer opportunities make it easy to support children and families in need by volunteering from home, at work, at school, or in your local community. Off-site projects can be completed individually or with a school, business, or community organization, making it simple to get involved in a way that fits your life.

Organize a Drive

Organizing a drive for clothing or essentials is a meaningful way to support the children we serve and ensure we have the items we need to address clothing insecurity and provide basic material needs. Community volunteers are needed year-round to organize and run drives for clothing, sneakers, diapers, new socks and new underwear.

We also have seasonal needs that include Halloween costumes (mid-September to mid-October only), prom and graduation attire (March and April only) and coats (October through December). See below for more details.

Rally your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or school community by hosting a donation drive at your home, workplace, or organization, then deliver the collected items to The Sharing Shelf for immediate distribution across Westchester County.

Volunteers filling hygiene kits for The Sharing Shelf

Kit Building

Help reduce stress on financially struggling families and allow children to feel confident and proud by filling kits with essential needs:
  • Hygiene kits for infants with: full-size baby shampoo, unscented baby lotion, diaper cream, baby or toddler toothbrush and toothpaste, and a pack of baby wipes.
  • Hygiene sets for children with full-sized age-appropriate shampoo and condition, a bar of neutral soap, a child sized individually wrapped toothbrush, and toothpaste geared toward younger children
  • Hygiene sets for teens with full-sized shampoo and conditioner, a bar of neutral soap, deodorant, an individually wrapped toothbrush, and toothpaste
We encourage you to use sulfate-free hair products so we can serve children and teens with all hair types.
