Diaper need is a quiet but serious crisis affecting thousands of families across Westchester County. In 2025, The Sharing Shelf distributed more than 348,000 free diapers to nearly 6,400 infants and children in need and the demand continues to outpace supply.
In a newly published OpEd in the Yonkers Times, our Founder and Executive Director Deborah Blatt shines a light on the scale of diaper insecurity in our region and calls on New York State to more than double its funding for diaper banks from $1 million to $2.5 million in the FY 2026–2027 state budget.
Diapers cannot be donated used. They must be purchased new, and no public assistance program covers the cost for struggling families. State funding is essential to meeting this need on the scale required.
